Unlike the other Hellraiser anthologies this is a portmanteau with a wrap around segment about a supply teacher who comes to teach a class of children after their previous teacher a nun has her wig stolen as well as getting the kids to recount stories of their summer vacation she's also trying to find out what happened to the wig It's a pretty lame wrap around with ugly watercolour art by Mark EvansThe stories are largely OK except they really don't fit the concept of 'what i did on my summer vacation' which annoyed me greatly because it makes the whole feel disjointed and the wrap around redundant why not just have it stay as an anthology?the 1st story Babycakes looks at a barren woman so desperate for a child she turns to the Cenobites I love the idea of demonic pregnancy and the eventual result here a neonate that is both a Cenobite AND a lament configuration is such a great concept however Gerry Taloc's art doesn't do much for it again with the watercolour and the Cenobite father is hugely mundaneHated the devil's absolution the story looks at a French crimelord who comes to the rescue when his daughter gets involved in a Hollywood cult Jorge ZaffinoChristie Scheele's art is heavily lined and sketchy with dull colours while it's a relief to move away from the water colour still pretty hideousFor my son looks at an illegal immigrant working in a sweatshop trying to provide for his son The characters here are emotionally engaging and I loved the idea of an underground tube map being a kind of Leviathan puzzle Also have to say that the sewing machine head Cenobite is original and freaky However over all not keen on Bill Koeb's dreary dark art everything's so indistinctThe last story Old Wive's tale has the best art in the volume Steven Johnson's detail on faces is great as is the multi eyed hell guardian of the box However the story is a bit dull a teacher confiscates a lament configuration box and learns that old wives tales and monsters under the bed are realSo the stories in this are OK but don't feel particularly Clive Barker y there's no pinhead or Barker's vision of hell It also really doesn't hang together very well as a whole I could have done without the wrap around all together The art is a mixed bag as ever but there wasn't much in here to stand out and some of it's hideous
