“God’s Word must be central in all that we are all that we do and all that we think about We must do whatever it takes to keep God foremost in our lives” p28“His Word in my Heart” by Janet Pope is written in a relatable and story telling style The author explains her own testimony of coming to know God in salvation and how she is growing to know him through memorizing Scripture—she’s memorized over 140 chaptersOne thing that really stood out was her motivation for memorization being love for God The author’s love for God is clear throughout the book and inspiring The you know him the you will love him She calls out Christian women today who feel that they have no time to invest in Bible memorization and makes the connection from that to how many women find themselves stressed selfish and thinking along with the world’s philosophies She drives this home with a study of Psalm 1 and the charge to embrace the God of the Bible rather than the god in our own mindsWith this foundation she gives practical guidance on how to change the way you spend your time so that you can learn to know God and walk closely with him Instead of waiting for an idealistic hours long uninterrupted uiet times Pope explains how to train yourself to recognize pockets of time in the day that you can fill with God’s WordBig sections of the book are actual daily walk throughs to help the reader memorize Psalm 1 and the book of Titus Near the end of the book she gives strategies for memorization and reviewing passages so you don’t forget them One specific thing I appreciated is how she writes that many Christians only choose favorite or “relevant” passages to memorize and states—“All Scripture is God breathed and no portion is irrelevant” p 60 She says this comes out in her teaching opportunities on this topic where people act like she is a extra credit Christian for being passionate about Bible memory and don’t think they could ever do the same This book drives home the big difference it makes in a person to delight in God and his word meditating on it all the day

There's a lot of truth in this book and I really appreciate Pope acknowledging that memorization isn't everything She clearly has a love for God and His word and that's very encouragingThe Bible does not command us to memorize Scripture Spending uality time in God's Word leads us to a greater knowledge of God and memorizing is one productive way to achieve that The goal of memorizing should not be confused with the ultimate goal of knowing God and loving Him p 27The book itself is a uick read apart from the memorization exercises but I still felt it could have been condensed It was a bit repetitive here and there But it's a worthwhile read that will encourage and challenge those who read it if not to memorize Scripture then at least to regularly read and meditate on itAs God renews our minds with Scripture we begin to think biblically so that we can live biblically Thinking biblically presupposes Bible knowledge Without it you have no filter and nothing to weigh your options against You cannot come up with God's perspective without understanding God's thoughts expressed in His Word p 122I think it would be most beneficial for use in a small group

In His Word in My Heart Mrs Pope introduces us to a effective method for memorizing and meditating on scriptureShe did lose me a bit when she almost seems to say that doing anything during your down time such as crossword puzzles reading or listening to music is a waste of time when you should be focused solely on Scripture I believe her point was that if you think you don't have time for memorization but have time in your day for those other things that you could reprioritize But still in my opinion it came across a little heavy and off puttingOver all though I enjoyed the book and found it informative and helpful I have used her method going at my own pace and have already memorized Psalm 1 in its entirety
